Project Tektite Documentary Preview Screening At Bajo El Sol Gallery

PRESS RELEASE – Bajo El Sol Gallery, St. John Film Society and Friends of Virgin Islands National Park are hosting a preview screening fundraiser featuring the first segment of the Project Tektite: America’s Undersea Space Program documentary. Two one hour events will include a conversation with Tektite aquanauts and a QnA with the filmmakers Steve Simonsen and Bill Stelzer.

The Project Tektite documentary aims to capture the iconic Tektite program that took place in Lameshur Bay in Virgin Islands National Park in 1969 and 1970. A private public partnership between the likes of GE, NASA, US Navy, Department of the Interior and others, the Tektite program was the first scientists-in-the-sea program sponsored nationally.  In addition, the documentary will anchor an outreach and education program highlighting the marvels of the deep sea, deep space connection and the program’s legacy.

Supported through the Friends Artist In Residence Program, the documentary film makers, Steve Simonsen and William Stelzer are long time St. John residents. Experienced film makers, videographers and photographers, they have been collecting Tektite material and recording interviews with the Tektite crew for over 15 years.
