Friends Artist-In-Residence Kayden Richards Presents “Personal Legends”
PRESS RELEASE | St. John, US Virgin Islands, December 1, 2023 – Friends of Virgin Islands National Park is hosting a book signing and presentation by Kayden Corbett Richards of his “Personal Legends” project on Saturday, December 9 from 4:30PM – 6:30PM at St. John School Of The Arts in Cruz Bay.
A visual documentary of Virgin Islanders featuring people of St.John, St.Thomas, and St.Croix, “Personal Legends” seeks to honor the strength and wisdom passed down through the ages, celebrating the triumphs and tribulations that have molded Virgin Islanders into the remarkable individuals they are today.
In his artist statement, Kayden says: “As I embarked on this creative exploration, I became a storyteller, weaving together the past and the present to reveal the personal legends hidden within each person. Through the visual power of my work, I invite viewers to embark on their own journeys of discovery, encouraging them to find their personal legends. In doing so, I hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the enduring spirit of Virgin Islanders and the profound importance of preserving our heritage and claiming space.”
As the artist-in-residence at Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, Kayden Richards benefits from a program designed to help Virgin Islanders explore and develop their creative talents. Tonia Lovejoy, Executive Director of Friends adds, “Kayden Richards is a wonderfully talented photographer very deserving of the recognition inherent in being a recipient of a Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands National Endowment for the Humanities grant. This project is an exciting visual documentary that reflects the richness of the people of the Virgin Islands.”
Personal Legends is made possible thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands with funding provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant was applied for, and managed by, Friends of Virgin Islands National Park as a part of their Artist-In-Residence program that aims to help Virgin Islanders explore and develop their creative talents. The program assists the artist by promoting their work, offering mentorship, and providing work experience and financial support. The Friends is committed to enriching local talent, investing in preserving Virgin Islands culture, and connecting creatives to the Park. Learn more — https://friendsvinp.org/artist-in-residence/
