Fishing is a significant aspect of Virgin Islands life and culture. Our Learn to Fish Program presents a valuable opportunity to engage the next generation of conservationists with meaningful outdoor experiences and educate them on the fish species in our waters, safe and sustainable fishing practices, healthy living, and environmental protection.

This summer, Friends of Virgin Islands National Park is seeking Virgin Islands youth ages 9-15) to be a part of a free, one week class for junior anglers.

The class teaches the basics of sustainable fishing in Virgin Islands National Park. Each applicant may participate in only ONE of the classes:

  • June 22 to June 26, 2026
  • July 6 to July 10, 2026
  • July 20 to July 24, 2026

The program is based out of Cruz Bay, St John.

All the necessary fishing gear will be provided, and participants will take home a rod and reel upon completion of the program. During the program, the junior anglers will learn about the history of fishing, the laws of fishing, types, sizes and eligible “take” options, the appropriate safe sites, and proper use of fishing gear.

Requirements: The program involves fishing from a boat. For safety reasons, all participants MUST be able to swim and be comfortable being on boats for several hours at a time. Ideally, participants should have an interest in nature, fishing, marine biology, and/or environmental conservation.

To apply, please send application form to/ or contact Program Director, Mark Gestwicki at mgestwicki@friendsvinp.org or  (340) 779-4940

This program was made possible thanks to a grant from the National Park Foundation's 2025 Junior Ranger Angler Program.
